View over the central square from the deserted Hotel Polisye (Polissia?) in Pripyat. The central market and residential houses are across the square, and the Palace of Culture "Energetik" to the right.
Pripyat was built 1970 as a modern city for personnel at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant a couple of kilometers south. After the nuclear disaster at reactor 4 on April 26 1986, the town's 48.000 inhabitants was evacuated to other parts of the country. Pripiat is today a radioactive ghost town. The whole area is contamined with nuclear material, the half-life of plutonium-239 is more than 24.000 years.
Pripyat, Ukraine.
