The brand new park was planned to be opened to the public during the celebrations on May 1, 1986, but disaster struck first.
Pripyat was built 1970 as a modern city for personnel at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant a couple of kilometers south. After the nuclear disaster at reactor 4 on April 26 1986, the town's 48.000 inhabitants was evacuated to other parts of the country. Pripiat is today a radioactive ghost town. The whole area is contamined with nuclear material, the half-life of plutonium-239 is more than 24.000 years.
